Cotleigh beers were often found in many of the independent pubs in the area, including popular news such Tawny, Barn Owl and Buzzard. However, last September (2021) the Somerset brewer announced its closure after nearly 35 years of brewing cask beers in the West Country and with great sadness they disappeared from the bar counters.
But now there is good news. At a time when we hear of many brewery closures, this is a welcome beacon in a trade that has been hit more than others in recent times.
Ross Nuttycombe, a well established publican who has owned the Star Inn at Watchet for around 12 years has now purchased the brewery and brewing started on the site again this month (May 2022).
The first brew from the refurbished site has coincided with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and is named Sovereign. Using the Sovereign hop and a pale malt, the light ale at 4.3% abv has been produced as a one off special. Three more brews are in the pipeline and another seven to follow.
Over the next couple of months it is planned to open a brewery shop and a tap room.
